First Steps

I want to study abroad. How do I start the process?

Step 1: Come to a Study Abroad 101 session.  You only need to come to one.  They are held in 218 Administration Building on Mondays from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. throughout the semester, and by appointment during the summer months and the January term.

Step 2: Research different Study Abroad Program options with the information you received at Study Abroad 101 and on our website. When you find a program of interest that you think may count for credit back here at UMBC (for your major, minor, electives or general education) make a list of that program’s course title(s), corresponding course description(s) and syllabus (if available) before meeting with your academic advisor to discuss your created list.

Step 3: Meet with your academic advisor to discuss how study abroad fits into your academic plans at UMBC.  Review your degree audit to identify courses you could take overseas in order to fulfill graduation requirements for your major, minor, GEPs or electives.  Contrary to popular belief, study abroad does not delay graduation as long as you plan accordingly.

Step 4: Meet with a study abroad advisor during walk-in hours to discuss your plans and application. Walk-in hours are posted on our homepage.

Step 5: Apply.
