Brian has directed UMBC’s Study Abroad Office since 2000. His first study abroad experience was on a high-school exchange in Finland. He returned to Finland for a second year, attending the University of Helsinki on a Finnish Ministry of Education scholarship. He spent two summers on intensive Russian language programs in Moscow, Russia, and completed a year of research in Tallinn, Estonia at the Estonian Academy of Sciences.
Brian holds a B.A. in Slavic Languages and Literatures and Political Science from Indiana University and an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned his Ph. D. in UMBC’s Language, Literacy and Culture program in 2009, investigating how study abroad participants interpret U.S. national identity after their international education experience.
In his spare time, he is an avid runner, with 28 marathons and two triathlons under his belt. He is also a marathon coach for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. When not in Baltimore, he rarely lets his passport and backpack get dusty with a new international adventure always in the back of his mind.
