I want to study abroad. How do I start the process?

Step 1: Study Abroad 101

Come to a Study Abroad 101 information session.  You only need to come to one.  They are held in room 218 in the Administration Building on Mondays from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. throughout the semester, and by appointment during the summer and winter terms.

Step 2: Research Programs

Research different Study Abroad Program options with the information you received at Study Abroad 101 and on our website. When you find a program of interest that you think may count for credit back here at UMBC (for your major, minor, electives or general education) make a list of that program’s course title(s), corresponding course description(s) and syllabus (if available) before meeting with your academic advisor to discuss your created list.

Step 2.5: Pre-Advising (optional)

Meet with a Study Abroad Peer Advisor for a Pre-Advising Appointment. Our Peer Advisors can help you start the search process. You can find their advising hours online!

Step 3: Meet with Your Academic Advisor

Meet with your academic advisor to discuss how study abroad fits into your academic plans at UMBC.  Review your degree audit to identify courses you could take overseas in order to fulfill graduation requirements for your major, minor, GEPs or electives.  Contrary to popular belief, study abroad does not delay graduation as long as you plan accordingly.

Step 4: Meet with a Study Abroad Advisor

Meet with a study abroad advisor to discuss your plans and the application process.

Step 5: Apply

Complete the UMBC Study Abroad Application by the deadline (see below). You may have an additional application for your specific program. In most cases, students need to complete a UMBC-specific application and a program application. Program deadlines may vary.
