The following are fees associated with study abroad and should be included in any budgeting considerations.
All study abroad fees are non-refundable.
Application Fee
Fee: $100
*If an application is withdrawn before the deadline, there will be no fee charged.
Applicable To: UMBC Study Abroad Application
Charge Timeline: Charged when a completed application is submitted by the deadline. This fee may be moved to another study abroad term without additional cost.
Late Application Fee: applications that are received after the posted deadline will be charged an additional $100 late application fee.
Participation Fee
Fee: $300 (not built into program cost)
Applicable To: All study abroad programs EXCEPT UMBC-Faculty Led
Charge Timeline:
- Applies to students who have accepted and committed to their study abroad program.
- Fee is charged when students register for their AWAY course and not when the application is being processed.
UMBC Faculty-Led Program Deposit
Deposit: $400 towards the total program fee
Applicable To: UMBC Faculty-Led Programs ONLY
Charge Timeline: Charged after student has accepted and committed to their study abroad program.
Faculty-led Withdraw Policy
Withdrawals/Refunds: Standard UMBC withdrawal/add/drop deadlines do not apply to UMBC faculty-led study abroad programs.
- Students who withdraw from their program after committing will be responsible for 50% of the program fee. Financial liability increases to 100% of the program fee if the withdrawal occurs 45 days or less before the program is scheduled to start.
- Students will automatically be enrolled in a comprehensive international travel policy, however, students may wish to consider purchasing additional travel insurance with “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage for their study abroad related expenses in the event that they need to withdraw.
- The student must submit their intention to withdraw via email to the UMBC Education Abroad Office at educationabroad@umbc.edu.
