Once you have studied abroad, often you are thinking about how you can go abroad again. Good news! There are plenty of opportunities to go abroad before or after graduating from UMBC. The following programs vary from internships to jobs to research opportunities. The Education Abroad Office is happy to advise you on these opportunities – particularly on scholarship programs that can enhance your post-UMBC academic or professional plans!

For Current Students:

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

Program Type: Research abroad, study abroad or teach abroad

The Fulbright U.S. Program is a federally funded program that provides grants to U.S. citizens to research, teach English, or earn a master’s degree in more than 140 countries throughout the world.  This prestigious award gives UMBC students the opportunity to enhance their professional and academic while representing the United States as cultural ambassadors.

Boren Scholarship

Program Type: Study abroad

The Boren Awards fund the intensive study of language and culture abroad for U.S. citizens enrolled in an undergraduate studies program. All eligible applicants must be planning to participate in a study abroad program outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Boren applicants are also eligible to apply for Regional Flagship Language Initiatives, which offers credit-bearing undergraduate language courses during the summer (domestic) and fall (overseas) for Turkish, Hindi/Urdu, several African languages (including French) and Indonesian. Application deadline falls in early February. Dr. Souders is UMBC’s Boren Scholarship advisor.

Boren Fellowship

Program Type: Research Abroad, Study Abroad

Boren Fellowships fund currently enrolled U.S. graduate students to conduct research and study language in world regions critical to U.S. interests outside of Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand. Boren Fellows are also eligible to receive funding for domestic summer language programs immediately prior to their overseas study.  Application deadline falls in late January. Dr. Souders is UMBC’s Boren Fellowship advisor.

Critical Language Scholarship

Program Type: Study abroad, Language intensive

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully funded immersive summer sponsored by the U.S. Department of State for U.S. citizens. DAAD-Rise Germany

Program Type: Intern abroad

DAAD-Rise Germany is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and allows undergraduate students from North American, British and Irish universities to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions. These internships are in various sectors of the Science and Engineering fields. Applications are due in mid-December.

English Program in Korea (EPIK)

Program Type: Teach Abroad

The English Program in Korea (EPIK) is a program funded by the Korean Ministry of Education. The goals of this program are to improve the English-speaking abilities of Korean students and teachers, to develop cultural exchange between Korea and abroad, and to introduce new teaching methods into the Korean education system.

Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET Program)

Program Type: Teach Abroad

The JET Program is a fully-funded opportunity to live and work in cities, towns, and villages throughout Japan. Positions available in the program include Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) and Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs). ALTs work in Japanese schools to assist Japanese teachers in foreign language classes and to engage in local international exchange activities. CIRs require high level of language fluency and mainly work in translation and interpretation.

Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF)

Program Type: Teach Abroad

TAPIF allows individuals to work in France for 7 months, teaching English to French students of all ages. The program’s goal is to strengthen foreign-language instruction in French schools by establishing a native speaker presence. TAPIF will also provide young professionals from around the world with initial international teaching experience and first-hand knowledge of French language and culture.

North American Language and Culture Assistants Program (NALCAP) in Spain

Program Type: Teach Abroad

NALCAP is a program funded by the Education Office of the Embassy of Spain to partner American college students and graduates with schools in Spain to bolster language programs as language assistants. While under contract, participants are offered a monthly stipend and medical insurance in exchange for a range from 14 to 16 hours per week of assistant teaching.

Princeton in Africa

Program Type: Fellowship Abroad

A Princeton in Africa fellowship experience that’s described as a way to get a foot in the door of the field of development on the African continent. The fellowship experience varies greatly depending on placement and organization.

Princeton in Asia

Program Type: Fellowship Abroad

Princeton in Asia (PiA) is an independent non-profit organization affiliated with and located on-campus at Princeton University. The fellowship program offers Fellows a change in perspective, a job that matters and a community for life across different countries in Asia.

Humanity in Action

Program Type: Fellowship Abroad

Humanity in Action supports various fellowships in various different countries. These fellowships rotate each year to offer new opportunities to fellows. Prior to beginning the fellowship, fellows participate in an intense period of immersive study in the summer and an ongoing training program throughout the fall and winter

Peace Corps

Program Type: Volunteer Abroad

PEACE Corps is a service-driven international program that operates in several different sectors. This program occurs over two years with three months of additional training. PEACE Corps searches for anyone who wants to learn and grow while working with others to foster world peace and friendship.  Interested students may wish to consider UMBC Peace Corps Prep Program to gain additional intercultural and practical skills for a competitive Peace Corps application.

Schwarzman Scholars

Program Type: Fellowship Abroad

Schwarzman Scholars is a fully-funded opportunity to complete a master’s program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Prospective Scholars are expected to demonstrate academic excellence, exceptional results in their field and outstanding leadership qualities.

Yenching Academy of Peking University 

Program Type: Study Abroad

The Yenching Academy of Peking University offers an interdisciplinary master’s program in China Studies. The program is highly customizable Master’s program in China studies for English speakers with varied levels of Chinese language competency across several humanities and social science disciplines.

Taiwan Scholarships

Program Type: Study Abroad

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs funds tuition, fee and housing allowance scholarships for its international master’s degrees throughout the country. These degrees, taught in English, are offered at the country’s prestigious public and private universities, and offer an outstanding opportunity to experience their academic interests from an East Asian perspective.
